Job Summary


The Associate Scientist position is responsible for the design, construction, operation, and analysis of radars and for assisting with field deployments of these radars and associated meteorological instruments.

This position is at the NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) in the Data, Instrumentation, and Field Campaigns (DIF) Division, which seeks to deploy and maintain instruments for field programs and use observations to improve process understanding of hydrometeorological phenomena.

Who We Are


At CIRES, more than 900 people work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people's relationship with the planet. An institute at the University of Colorado Boulder, we have partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) since 1967. Our areas of expertise include weather and climate, wildfire and water, changes at Earth's poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, and more. Our researchers work in ten CU Boulder departments and eight NOAA laboratories and centers.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • (65%) Perform theoretical studies, data analysis, hardware and software design, construction, and testing of radar systems in support of the DIF Division's radar observing program.
  • (30%) Analyze and write scientific reports using data from PSL's Snow Level Radars and other instruments to advance precipitation science.
  • (5%) Perform other duties as necessary.

  • This appointment is not eligible for vacation leave, holidays, annual merit pay increases, nor employee health, retirement, or related benefits, except those required by law.
  • This appointment will accrue 0.034 hours of sick leave for every hour worked.
  • The hours for this position may vary and are not guaranteed.

The hourly rate for this position is $85.25/hour. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with concentration in antennas and RF.
  • Master's degree in Atmospheric Science or a related field.
  • At least thirty years experience working with atmospheric profiling (non-scanning) radars.
  • Experience with high power RF systems.
  • Experience with low noise analog circuitry.
